Olympus - Cascade Mountain Ascents

Ski & Ride Trips

Olympus

The highest peak in the Olympic Mountains, Mount Olympus towers over Washington’s western shore and the rest of the range. The standard route is one of the most geographically diverse climbs in the Pacific Northwest and moves through stunning and varied terrain. The long approach through old-growth temperate rainforest starts near sea level and winds into the alpine, where climbers ascend the Blue Glacier to Olympus’s craggy summit. The Blue Glacier features moderate climbing for thousands of feet before a final rocky scramble to the summit, looking out over Puget Sound, the Cascade Crest and the Pacific Ocean. Beginner mountaineers with a love of backpacking and experienced climbers looking for a wilderness experience will all love an ascent of Mount Olympus.

Here’s What To Expect

Itinerary

Day 1: We’ll meet at the Hoh River Trailhead for our Gear Check and Orientation then begin the hike up the Hoh River Valley. We’ll get as far up the trail as possible before finding one of many beautiful campsites in the old-growth forest.

Day 2: We continue our approach to the high camp below the Blue Glacier. Here, we’ll set up camp, stretch out after the long approach, and review skills for the following day’s ascent.

Day 3: We’ll get an early start to ascend the lower slopes of Mount Olympus. The Blue Glacier provides moderate passage through icefalls to the final summit climb. A pitch of rock leads to the summit. Enjoy the unique views of the Cascades, the Pacific Ocean and the rest of the peninsula before reversing your route back to camp.

Day 4: On our final day we will leave camp in the morning to begin hiking out to the trailhead. Eighteen miles later and you’ll be back at the car for a final celebration of your trip. This long day can be broken into two for those looking for a more leisurely exit or more time in the Hoh Rainforest.
